Samatha is working with symptoms, vipassana is working with causes. What does it mean?

Samatha I think removes the five mental hindrances and prepares the mind for wisdom.
Then when the mind is more tranquil and prepared (the causes) bathed in some wisdom, Vipassana – as I understood it – means we can see things as they really are. This also includes the law of cause-and-effect and the relationship between mental and physical states and so on and so forth.
